In discussions with athletes and insiders in the outdoor gear market, we evaluated the opportunities and risks for the Flexible Link System in sports-related applications. Based on these insights, Flink designed a compact backpack that is suitable for hiking, fitness, biking and climbing.
- Rotational movement between hip and shoulder
- Lateral movement of the upper body
- Comparison of posture
The requirements for the further development of the system were defined on the basis of this analysis, and in continued collaboration with the physical therapist.

The plastic components were designed based on insights derived from field tests and motion analysis. Along with ergonomic and bio-mechanical requirements, the manufacturing process itself set important limiting conditions. Together with the manufacturer, FLINK decided on a cost-efficient single-piece construction.
Along with the development of the new exo-frame, designs were devised for different areas of application.

The compact Bike-Backpack has a generous helmet halter. Other practical details include the generous access to the main compartment and reservoir and a rear compartment that is accessible even while riding.

The Fitness Pack has a central zipper through which the athlete has quick access to the capacious inner compartment and the reservoir. Two mesh pockets on the outside, stick holders and the practical rear pocket complete this elegant backpack.

The innovative backpack system presents a great challenge to the production partners and the entire production chain. That’s why we specifically sought flexible and experienced partners who were able to come with us on the challenging new road presented by this development.

FLINK chose to work with a Taiwanese supplier for the injection-die
moulded components. This company brings with it many years of
experience in producing and supplying plastic components for the sports
industry and knows the high demands on the quality of these components.
A family-owned company, it distinguishes itself through its
uncomplicated communication and impeccable working conditions.

For the fabrication of the textile elements, the decision went to a Taiwanese company with a production site in southern China. This company brings with it many years of experience in the production of sports-related articles and especially backpacks. This candidate made the cut thanks to its exemplary implementation of the design drafts.

It’s a big step from a good idea to a functioning product. Good project planning, structured and focused action and the optimal interaction of developers and producers all combine to make the efficient and successful completion of this challenging project possible.
